How to get to Tromsø
Plane
The easiest and most popular way to get to Tromsø is via airplane. You can reach the city by plane through many direct international flights. Current destinations:
- Frankfurt (Lufthansa)
- München (Lufthansa)
- Berlin (Norwegian, Eurowings)
- Milano (Norwegian)
- Hamburg (Eurowings)
- Düsseldorf (Eurowings)
- Vienna (Austrian)
- Paris (Norwegian, Air France)
- Amsterdam (Transavia)
- Helsinki (Finnair),
- Stockholm (SAS)
- Zürich (Edelweiss)
- Gdansk (Wizzair)
- London (Norwegian)
- Copenhagen (Norwegian)
– and the airport is only 4,5 kilometers (10 min by bus) from the city centre!
Hitchhiking
You could try hitchhiking if you want to get to Tromsø for free. The main thing to know is that Norway doesn’t really have a hitchhiking culture. Norwegians rarely pick up strangers off the side of the road, mostly because there are very few people standing on the side of the road, waiting for someone who will pick them up. Also, there’s the issue of distance and it could take you several days to travel that.
But our good friend Laurens Perol did it this Autumn and succeeded!
Boat
If you can’t fly to Tromsø or you’re interested in a more scenic route, getting here by boat is your third best option. There are quite a few different cruise lines and ferries that go to Tromsø, the most popular being Hurtigruten, which provides daily transport between Bergen and Kirkenes.
By train and bus
It is not possible to take the train all the way to Tromsø, it must be combined with a bus. Either take the train from Oslo to Bodø or Narvik (that one goes through Sweden) and take the bus from there.
It’s a rather long journey and it’s more expensive than a plane ticket from Oslo to Tromsø. On the other hand, the journey is regarded as one of the most beautiful scenic routes in all of Europe.
Car
Renting a car in Oslo can be a decent option for certain travelers, but this is only recommended if you’re interested in a multi-day road trip and make sure you’re comfortable navigating narrow and winding roads. For an extended tour of Tromsø and a unique adventure in Northern Norway, consider this seven-day road trip .
The costs are higher than the price of plane tickets – you need to rent a car, pay for gas, tolls, and pay extortionate fees if you want to leave the rental car at Tromsø instead of driving it back to Oslo.
